I’m Ali Mohamed Ali, known to most people as Kalaay. I’m a researcher and writer based in Mogadishu.
My work focuses on governance, education and economic development in Somalia. I’m interested in the gap between the policies written on paper and what actually happens in ministries, classrooms and markets, and in using careful evidence to narrow that gap.
I started this site to publish my research in one place and to write about it in plain language. You’ll find longer research articles, shorter essays, policy notes and notes on the books and reports I’m reading.
Findings from my own studies, written up for readers outside academia.
Questions about an article, an invitation to speak, or an idea for a study are all welcome.
